There is one thing an e-bike really changes in the mountains: the climb no longer stops you. With electric assist you can reach an alpine lake, ride back up a valley or add a few more kilometres without ending the day with empty legs. It does not mean you pedal without effort: the motor helps, but your legs still do the work, and a little fitness is always needed. In this guide we tell you what an e-bike opens up in Trentino, which lakes and valleys you can reach and what to know about rental and charging, based only on places we know for real. We at Italy Holiday have been welcoming guests in these valleys for a long time, and these are the rides we would recommend to a friend.

Why an e-bike opens up the Alps
In Trentino the most beautiful spots are almost always a little higher up: a lake among the woods, a mountain hut, a side valley. On a normal bike you only reach them if you are fit. With an e-bike it is different: the climb becomes manageable, so places that were once for the few become within reach of many.
The good thing is that renting an e-bike here is simple. In Val di Sole there is a shared-bike service with stations near the train stops, and around Madonna di Campiglio there are over two hundred rental points for bikes and e-bikes. In Valsugana rental is widespread, and charging stations are arriving in the villages, so you can recharge the battery during a break. You will find bikes for every need and age, usually at an hourly or daily rate.
One honest thing to say: an e-bike does not replace fitness, it adds to it. The routes we suggest are still real climbs, and a few hours of riding are felt all the same. Bring water, a light jacket and a helmet, because the weather changes quickly in the mountains, and set off with a full battery.
The places an e-bike lets you reach
From easy riding along the lakes to climbs up to the huts and the alpine lakes, here are the spots that electric assist truly brings within reach, all in our valleys.
1. Lago di Caldonazzo, the lake loop without the effort
In Valsugana, Lago di Caldonazzo is a large lake ringed by beaches and villages, one of the warmest lakes in southern Europe, with water reaching nearly twenty-four degrees in summer. Around it and along the valley runs a comfortable, almost flat cycle path, perfect to ride on an e-bike at a relaxed pace.
With electric assist you extend the loop without thinking about it: start at the lake, follow the path and reach the nearby villages, stopping for a swim or an ice cream whenever you like. It is the simplest way to enjoy a day by the lake on two wheels, even with children along. If you want the full route, read our guide to riding along the Valsugana.

2. Lago di Levico, the gentle ride through the woods
Also in Valsugana, near Levico Terme, Lago di Levico has the long shape of a fjord and is surrounded by wooded hills. It is the only lake in Trentino with the Blue Flag, with tree-lined free beaches and a trail that follows its shores. Its mild, clear waters and gentle banks make it ideal for swimming, walking and cycling with the family.
On an e-bike it is a relaxing stop, easy to combine with the loop of Lago di Caldonazzo along the same valley. Electric assist lets you link the two lakes without getting tired, enjoying the shady stretches among the trees and the stops on the beaches. A calm ride, within everyone's reach.

3. Val di Sole, riding up the valley along the Noce river
Val di Sole is a wide alpine valley in Trentino, enclosed between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello and Presanella groups, inside the Stelvio National Park. The Noce river runs through it, and a fine valley-floor cycle path follows its banks.
Here the e-bike shows its worth: the cycle path is largely flat, but if you ride it up towards the upper valley, electric assist takes away the effort of the gentle climbs and lets you cover more kilometres in a day. In the valley there are shared-bike rental stations near the train stops, handy for picking up a bike and setting off. For the full route along the Noce, see our guide to riding in Val di Sole.

4. Lago dei Caprioli, an emerald lake above Pellizzano
Just above Pellizzano, set in the woods of the Fazzon area, Lago dei Caprioli awaits, a small mountain lake with emerald-green waters at about one thousand two hundred and eighty metres. It is surrounded by conifer forests and green meadows, and is one of the most photographed spots in Val di Sole, perfect for a picnic and a break.
To reach it from the valley floor you climb, and here the e-bike makes the difference: electric assist turns the climb up to the lake into a satisfaction rather than a struggle. It is one of those high places that, without a motor, only the fittest would reach, and that with an e-bike become a reward within reach of many. The best time runs from late spring to early autumn.

5. Lago delle Malghette, the mirror of water below the Brenta Dolomites
Near Madonna di Campiglio, Lago delle Malghette is an alpine lake at about one thousand nine hundred metres, in the heart of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, surrounded by conifer woods and facing the peaks of the Brenta Dolomites. Its clear waters mirror the mountains, and on its shores there is a hut where you can stop to rest and eat something local.
The ride up to the Malghette is a demanding climb, with a good amount of elevation: on an e-bike it remains a ride to tackle with a bit of breath, but it becomes possible for those who would not attempt it on a normal bike. It is the perfect example of what electric assist opens up: an alpine lake, once reserved for the most prepared, that you can now reach while enjoying the woods and the view instead of counting every metre of climb.

6. Madonna di Campiglio, the base for assisted climbs
Madonna di Campiglio is a well-known alpine resort at one thousand five hundred and fifty metres, surrounded by the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello glaciers, with the Vallesinella waterfalls and lakes such as Nambino and Ritorto. It is a paradise for cycling: many climbs up to lakes and huts, and a great many rental points for bikes and e-bikes.
From here the higher destinations become reachable with electric assist: the lakes below the peaks, the scenic trails, the huts where you can stop to eat. It is the ideal base for those who want to use the e-bike for exactly what it does best, that is, turning a big climb into a fine day at altitude.

7. Val di Pejo, where the valley climbs towards the glaciers
At the upper end of Val di Sole, Val di Pejo opens as a higher side valley, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. It is ringed by three-thousand-metre peaks such as Vioz and Cevedale, with glaciers, mountain lakes and thermal springs known since 1650.
It is a wild and quiet corner, perfect to explore on an e-bike by riding up the valley-floor roads and trails towards the park. Electric assist helps you gain height through the woods, where the air grows cooler and the landscape more alpine. An ideal finish for those who, after the lakes and the valley, want to push towards the high mountains without ending the day with empty legs.

8. Lago di Molveno, the lake at the foot of the Brenta
At the foot of the Brenta Dolomites, a World Heritage site, Lago di Molveno is an alpine lake with crystal-clear waters, a grassy beach often considered among the prettiest in Italy and a trail that loops around it for about twelve kilometres. You can swim, go canoeing and pedal-boating, and all around there are easy walks.
The loop of the lake on an e-bike is a pleasant, almost flat ride, suitable for everyone, with the view of the Brenta peaks as a backdrop. Electric assist lets you close the loop calmly and add a few detours nearby without getting tired. A classic not to be missed, gentle and scenic.

A practical tip before you set off
The e-bike makes everything easier, but a few precautions help. Set off with a full battery and keep an eye on the range, especially on climbs, where the motor uses more: bring the charger and make use of the charging stations where they exist. Many valley-floor routes have the railway running alongside and a service to load the bike onto the train, handy for not riding back the way you came: keep in mind, though, that the rules for electric bikes can be different from those for normal bikes, so check the current conditions of the service in advance. Finally, choose the ride according to your fitness: even with the help of the motor, a long climb is still a climb.
