There is not just one right time to visit Trentino: there are four, each with its own character. There is the spring of blossoming apple orchards and meadows waking up, the summer of warm lakes and mountain cool, the golden autumn of larch woods and the winter of snow on the Dolomites. The choice depends on what you are looking for: swimming, walking, skiing or simply slowing down. In this guide we tell you when to visit Trentino season by season, with the typical weather, what makes each period special and who it suits best, plus a quick month-by-month guide. We at Italy Holiday have been welcoming guests to this land for a long time, and these are the tips we would give a friend who asks us when to go.

Spring
Spring in Trentino is the season of awakening. From late March to June the days grow longer, the air turns mild and the Adige valley warms up gradually, with temperatures rising week by week. At altitude it can still be cool and you may find snow on the highest passes, but down in the valley it is one of the most pleasant seasons to spend time outdoors.
The most spectacular moment is the apple blossom in Val di Non, the great apple valley of Trentino. Between late March and early May millions of white and pink flowers cover the orchards, first in the valley floor and then, climbing higher, towards mid April and beyond. It is a show that does not last long, because each bloom stays on the tree for only about ten days, so it is best not to wait too long. Later, from May onwards, it is the turn of the mountain meadows: crocuses, gentians and anemones line the trails, and in June the great high-altitude expanses turn yellow.
It is the right season for those who love to walk at a relaxed pace, photograph the colours and visit villages and castles without the summer crowds. The lakes are not yet warm enough for swimming, but the walks along their shores are perfect. If you want a few ideas on what to do in this period, read our guide to what to do in Trentino in spring.

Summer
Summer is the most beloved season, and it is easy to see why: while the heat gives no respite down in the plains, here you can swim in a warm lake in the morning and walk in the shade of a wood in the afternoon. On the valley floor summer temperatures rise pleasantly to around twenty degrees and above, while at altitude the air always stays fresh and light. The days are long and bright, although in the afternoon a thunderstorm may roll in, typical of mountain summers.
The star of the season is water. The lake swimming season runs roughly from May to the end of September, with the warmest months between June and August. Lake Caldonazzo, in Valsugana, is one of the warmest lakes in Europe and its mild water invites you to linger. Nearby there are other lakes you can swim in, alpine lakes with crystal-clear water and cool walks to waterfalls, perfect on the hottest days.
It is the ideal season for families, for those looking for a beach and water sports and for those who want to combine a lake swim with mountain hikes. If you are thinking of a summer holiday, you will find all the ideas in our guide to what to do in Trentino in summer.

Autumn
Autumn is perhaps the most underrated season, and for many the most beautiful. From September to November the air turns crisp and clear, the days often stay sunny and the colours change slowly. September is still mild, with the first days when you can even take one last swim in the warmer lakes, while October brings the highlight: the foliage.
In October the larch woods light up in yellow and orange, with the Dolomites in the background. The larch is one of the few mountain trees that loses its needles in autumn, changing colour, and whole valleys, such as Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme, are transformed. The peak of colour usually arrives around the middle of October, but it can vary by a week depending on the year, so it is worth keeping an eye on the forecast before you set off. It is also the season of flavours, with chestnuts, freshly picked apples and heartier dishes.
It is the perfect period for those who love to walk in the cool air, photograph the colours and enjoy the mountains in peace, away from the crowds. For more ideas read our guide to what to do in Trentino in autumn.

Winter
Winter turns Trentino into a snowy landscape. From December to February it is cold, especially on the valley floor where cold air tends to settle, but in the mountains this is exactly what creates the best conditions for snow sports. Curiously, winter is also the driest season, with many clear days and bright skies above the peaks.
The ski season runs roughly from December to early April, with the most reliable snow and the most spectacular landscapes between January and February, the coldest and snowiest months. The Dolomites offer some of the finest ski areas in the world, but winter here is not only about skiing: there are snowshoe walks through silent woods, Christmas markets in the villages in December and the pleasure of coming back to a warm home after a day out in the cold. It is always worth checking the lift openings and snow conditions on the official sites before you go, as they depend on the year.
It is the right season for those who love skiing and snowy mountains, for families who want to play in the snow and for those looking for the atmosphere of the holidays. You will find more ideas in our guide to what to do in Trentino in winter.
